As pet owners, we accept the huge responsibility of caring for another living being for as long as they live. Food, water, shelter, vet care, excercise, an environment suited for them, etc...it's all a big deal. And it's not just about if the pet is a good fit for you...are YOU a good fit for the pet? That question is one of the most difficult for people to answer. Nobody wants to admit they are not the perfect pet owner.
Some of the common things that are neglected by pet owners as observed by our sitters: cat boxes are not kept clean, dog poop is not picked up, food is chosen by cost vs. what's best for the pet, small pet cages are not kept clean, it's too cold or too warm, not enough excercise or attention, too many pets that end up not getting individual care, dogs not properly trained (no manners), not enough playtime, medical issues ignored.
Pets count on us completely to provide everything they need...not what we want for them, but their basic needs. It is okay to have a lot of pets if your household can care for them all properly, but if they get lost in the shuffle, is it fair to them? If you are overwhelmed, so are they.
We encourage you to take just a moment and think about how your pet is living currently...are they as happy as they can be? Are they being fed consistently and appropriately (dogs should not eat cat food, for instance)? Do they have fresh water available at all times? Is their shelter ideal? Are they getting enough affection/attention/excercise? Do they get a health check up at least once a year? Are they being appropriately treated for any medical issues they have developed?
If there is any doubt in your mind about the quality of care you are able to offer your pet(s), we encourage you to reevaluate and make some subtle changes and most likely your pet will thank you in ways you've never experienced. One of our favorite sayings is: A tired dog is a happy dog. Excercise for a high energy dog does so many wonderful things, not just for your dog, but for your household.
Be the pet owner you promised you'd be...they count on you for everything...
